We always want our customers to make an informed decision on which products they would like to buy. This means you can always ask our staff to provide you with the best possible product advice over the phone or in store. Additionally, if you want to know more about indoor tanning lotions, we created an overview below of the most important types, properties and ingredients.

 (Indoor) Tanning Lotion

Tanning should never be done without a lotion, it increases the blood flow, accelerates the tanning process by encouraging the body to create more melanin and most importantly it protects the skin from dehydration. Additionally, countering dehydration by means of an indoor tanning lotion makes the skin look and feel healthy and smooth.
Contrarily to what some people think, tanning bed lotions do not contain any sun blocking properties. This because the beds themselves will provide the exact exposure you need, where we will always provide you with the right advice for your skin type.

Using a regular sun (block) tan lotion is prohibited in our tanning beds, as due to its greasy nature the substance can build up in the machine and damage its surface.
We always provide our customers with custom advice on which lotions are best for your skin type and/or situation. For customers that would like to do their own homework as well, we will provide some information on what to look for if you want the right lotion for you.

There are many different types of tanning lotions, bronzers, moisturisers, accelerators, etc. We first summarise the main types of lotion types and their contents and effects.

  • Accelerator: the lowest level (1) products for people that just started indoor tanning and are specifically designed to have 'tannewbies' achieve their base tan. Accelerators contain high quantities of moisturiser accelerating the tanning process and leaving a longer lasting effect after the session.

  • Maximisers: higher level (2) products for people that want to continue tanning after they achieved their base tan. These products should be applied right before a session as they contain lower levels of moisturiser.

  • Tingle: pretty much the highest level (3) of lotion, for people that want to push it further. These products increase the blood flow and speed up the skin’s repair process, which allows for faster tanning. This product is not for the faint of heart and should not be used by people that have sensitive skin, are beginners or are intolerant to its more extreme nature.

Providing additional information on what properties lotions have, we continue in summarising the main ones:

  • Bronzers: often accelerators and maximisers contain bronzing features, which are sunless self-tanners providing instant results when added to a lotion. Bronzers are a trick creating a fake tan layer before the tanning session, resulting in the underlying skin catching up to the applied fake layer. It is recommended to find a ‘streak free’ solution, to avoid uneven or orange looks.

  • DHA: bronzer lotions often contain this feature and causes the skin to create a stain that promotes a fake tan. When DHA (dihydroxyacetone) gets combined with other bronzers, it causes the skin to become darker. Therefore, if you are looking for a more natural tan you should get a DHA free bronzer.

  • Anti Aging: products that promote this have characteristics and vitamins protecting the skin from early aging.

  • Body Blush: the alternative for people that cannot handle the ‘tingle’ lotions, it has similar effects yet no prickly feeling or heat.

  • Shimmer: to add a little sparkle, this feature causes reflection on the skin and therewith adds a ‘luminous’ glow.

Tanning lotions have several types of specific ingredients that help with the tanning process. We summarised some of the main ingredients, in order to allow you to make and informed choice of products.

  • Hemp seed oil: rich and beneficial ingredient that moisturises and nourishes the skin

  • Caffeine: reduces ‘puffiness’ within the skin and energizes it by minimizing wrinkles and fine lines. This ingredient gets absorbed by the skin and is not meant for people that are sensitive to the substance or are on diets free of caffeine.

  • Silicon: a mineral that moisturises and ‘conditions’ the skin.

  • Beta Carotene (Vitamin A): encourages the skin’s coloration.

  • Vitamin E: makes the skin softer and renewed. Also, has anti-wrinkle and fine line properties.
